Texas T license plate and bent hoods

Post by John kuehn » Wed Jan 01, 2025 9:48 am

Here’s a photo that was on Facebook I thought was really telling. I have a small Texas plate like the one above that I found in my Grandfathers garage that’s in fair shape. I’m in Texas and I’m pretty sure the plate I have was on the Coupe I inherited from him years before. The plate is the first thing that caught my eye. The rest is in the title of this post!

Could that be a wartime plate? I've never seen a Texas plate that small except on a motorcycle. Texas issued small metal tags, under 2" square, to be attached to regular plates during at least several of the war years.

Here’s the Texas 1924 Motor Vehicle license plate that I found in my Grandfathers garage. I thought I could restore it years ago but it’s so brittle I decided not to. I tried to paint it just to more clearly see the lettering.

Older plates I used to find in this area were of all the long type. Some later ones from the 1940s were more nearly square. I used to have several new pairs of 1948 Truck plates.

When Chickasha was still going there was an older vendor that had boxes of old car plates but I never found any of the Texas postcard size plates like mine. He had a few of the later Texas plates in the 30’s but not any older. He was from Oklahoma and a really nice guy. What impressed me was that he had boxes full of old plates and the only vendor there that had plates. Probably Hershey has license plate collectors but I never went that far to a meet.

As far as the young lady on the hood of the T that wouldn’t happen today on a restored T and probably not on today’s cars either!
