SHIPPING WEIGHT ANYONE ?

Post by Brass TT » Wed Jan 22, 2025 9:48 am

I need to transport an engine accross country but do not have the capacity to weigh it (needed for shipper ). I can weigh the crate and packing etc but not an engine complete. Has anyone been thru this process or have any literature ?

I'm curious as to why you can weigh the crate which is larger then the engine, but cannot weigh the smaller engine. If it's a question of scale capacity, borrow another scale and put the loaded crate across the two scales and add the total from both scales together.

I do not have access to scales that can weigh that much. I can weigh the crate parts as I build it around the motor but not the engine nor the completed package. I can only weigh up to about 225Lbs.

There has been several threads with bits of interesting info on the weight topic, maybe I'll have to do my own weighing some day to sum it up..?
From: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/25 ... 1339332054
Four dip pan with hand crank................40
Trans guts (with flywheel & magnets)...99
Manifolds.................................................8
Mag ring.................................................18
Carburetor.................................................3
Generator................................................23
From: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/11 ... 1281751326
26.0 1926 Head
20.0 Starter with Bendix and Spring Assembly
32.0 1926 Transmission Cover with High Speed Clutch Assembly and No Pedals
1.75 Front Ball Cap Bearing
That sums up to about 397 lbs without bolts and pedals, so maybe a little over 400 lbs with starter and generator, about 40 lbs less without them. Don't know if the timing gear cover was included in the short block weighed by Jim Golden, but it doesn't add much.

I think that has given me enough information. Thanks to all who responded.

I did notice that in the direct replies and those linking back to older forum topics, the given weights for a bare block vary by about 13lbs.
Presumably due to changes for year production models - timing covers, hogshead mounts etc but irrelavent for my purposes.

Most trash transfer stations around here have drive-up scales for weighing bulky waste. If you have one in your town they may help you out if you drive the packed crate there and get a weight, and then return for a weight of the empty truck.
