carbide generator value

Post by donofnebraska » Wed Feb 26, 2025 4:53 pm

I am trying to help a friend determine a fair price for a pretty nice brass original E&J carbide generator she is thinking about selling. Does anybody have a good idea on the value or contact information for someone who could be helpful? I have more pictures I can provide, but for some reason I can't attach them to this message.
The top is dented and there is a crack visible on the upper edge of the lower tank and one other nearly invisible one (both of which I have pictures). It does not have a basket and the gasket needs replacement. The mounting bracket and even the mounting bolts are attached. I am sure it would polish up to be a very nice looking unit and actually looks very nice just like it is.
Whatever help I can get will be appreciated.

Looks like an original E & J. I'd put it in the $600-$900 range, depending on condition. I sold a perfect reproduction one 5 years ago for $1200.

Yes, it is an original. I am learning more about as I go along.
Thank you for your input.

The dent, cracks, missing basket, and gasket issue will lower its price, though it still seems like a nice piece overall. For valuation, I recommend reaching out to specialized antique lighting dealers or online auction platforms like eBay. A quick search of similar items can give a good starting point.
