How do I Remove This Gear ?

…or more appropriately: whats the Best way to remove this Model T rear axle gear ?… best way to remove 2 little
half moon keepers ? Then; assuming don’t use oxyacetylene, simply press gear off with my 30 Ton press ? Thank you in advance gh

Protect the threads with a nut. Someone had the idea of using an old rear hub. (like it) Use a long piece of round or square stock most the length of the axle. (keeps axle from bending)
Press the gear on further. (about 3/16") 1/2 moon clips are loose typically. remove them. Press the gear off.
Your press will do the job without heat.

As John eluded to, I use an old hub but I also insert an axle shim to cover the keyway.

Thank you John. I like the idea of using the rear hub to protect axle threads. But the threads will extend outboard of the hub so I’ll need 2 hubs, won’t I when pressing the gear down the 3/16” ? No problem; I have plenty. Think I’ll use copious quantities of PB Blaster. Now I’m not too clear on the use of a “long piece of round or square stock most the length of the axle”…I envision only short piece of round pipe to press, outside the axle inner end, the gear downward the 3/16” to remove the 1/2 moon clips then a short solid stock to press the axle downward to remove the gear…..right ?

Why remove it? If axle is bad enough to remove gear, saw the axle off. Leaving a short piece, press it in, remove keepers, press out the other direction.
Than install gear on good axle.
Sawed off axle becomes a stake for garden, horseshoe pit.
Can’t sell to circus, they want ones with gears on them for tent stakes.

You would have the flange on the press plates, on the lower rack & the center would protrude between.
Threaded end doesn't touch anything using a hub.

You still need the same setup to install the old gear on the new axle.
I don't see an advantage to cutting the axle. Takes less time to use the press than a hacksaw?

I use two nuts threaded on the end of the axle versus a rear hub. Have not messed up any threads after three axle rebuilds.
The first time I used a 1” square tube clamped into position to prevent kickback and axle bending. I’ve found the gear presses off easily and have pressed the axle out without that safety rigging.
I use a stack of washers to push the gear further on then a socket to push the axle through.

All, the axles and gears are in good condition. I removed them from a T decades ago and stored inside. Now I’m interested in grafting a Model T differential ring + carrier/axle gears, cut down driveshaft and pinion to a 1911 Hupmobile Model 20. A previous owner cobbled an inadequately engineered driveshaft and the ring/pinion lost a tooth. Originally this 16.9 HP Hupp had a 4.1:1 rear ratio and I hope to soon have a T 3.63:1 ratio, No Hyatt bearings will be needed. Two new roller bearings in the driveshaft and 4 new on the axles.

George, the gears can be an absolute bear to shift sometimes. The piece of close fitting tube or square section is slipped over the axle shaft so it does not bow when applying pressure with the press. The closer the fit the better and make it as long as you can fit between the gear and hub at the bottom.

I use a WK 4235 wheel puller( knock off type ) to protect the axle threads it also gives a square surface to press on. Also My press is one I built
& it has a way more robust base & more adjustments that operations like this much easier on.

I made a support tube to keep the axle from bending while pressing using a 2x2 square tube fitted with thumb screws so the axle would be supported from bending by the tube before any bending could occur. I ground smooth the ends of the screws so they wouldn’t scar the shaft, and welded a nut at the bottom to protect the threads. Screwed the shaft into the threads until it bottomed out. Maybe overkill, but it worked fine using a 20 ton press.
