Perfecto shifter?

Post by Craig Leach » Sun Jul 06, 2025 9:20 pm

Has anyone used or made work a Ruckstell or Hallscott shifter on a Perfecto two speed rear end? Thanks.
Craig.

I will work fine. The perfecto is the precursor to the Ruckstell.

I have some Perfecto parts including a shifter. I can bring them to the LBMTC swap meet. Want to sell it all. No housing.

I don't know if Craig is looking for parts or not naturally he would have first shot. If he isn't interested I am.

As I recall, the units are not interchangeable.

Are you talking about the shifter on the floor or the shift lock on th housing? The shifter used on what people refer to as the Hall Scott early Ruckstell is the same used on Perfectos. I dont see why any Ruckstell shifter wouldnt work. The shift locks are different. A Ruckstell will not bolt up to a Perfecto housing and vice versa. Although difficult you can fit Ruckstell innerds into a Perfecto housing per Fred Houston. Perfecto shift locks are difficult to come by, however.
Ive gathered a number of Perfectos in various condition for my needs and have restored three complete units. It requires careful machine work. They are not as sturdy as Ruckstells and some of the parts warp. That said they are a joy to operate. Currently I have them running in two of my three cars.

Steve & Chad,
I'm trying to sort out some parts that a friend has & wants to sell. I'm thinking the Perfecto is more desirable with the shifter or at least info on
setting up a shifter.

The shifter I have is brass and noticeably smaller than a Ruckstell. It is the part that bolts to the rearend housing (that I don't have). I will get my stuff out in the cool of the AM and take some pictures and see just what I have.
Thanks, Steve

My observation is that the shifters look very different they do appear to have very similar bolt patterns & the mechanism seems to work the same
The Ruckstell & Hall-Scott have a horse shoe that slips over the groove in the sliding clutch gear & the Perfecto has a brass yoke that is held to the sliding gear with a snap ring ( the yoke goes completely around the gear ) the groove the yoke goes into looks to be narrower than the one on a Ruckstell & Hall-Scott. The sliding gear does not look to be interchangeable in the pics I have seen but do in the one I'm dealing with? My thought
is either find a Perfecto o adapt a Hall-Scott shifter to the Perfecto. I have only seen the outside of the Perfecto shifter so I may be all wrong.
Craig.

The only interchangeable parts are the large ball bearing and the shifter at the transmission
