Post by Jfmarkham » Fri Jul 04, 2025 8:32 pm

Somethings going on with your triple gears perhaps a foreign object getting caught in the gears during rotation of the triple gears or worse loose pins.

Yes. You can reach in & wiggle the gears one @ a time with the gear to top position.

May be a noise from the clutch plates shifting to the opposite side of the lug.
Those lugs wear groves into themselves from the outer disk edges. Can be especially bad on later, pre wide, non replaceable lug shoes brake drums.

Don't rule out a rear end issue. Rear end noise is easily "telegraphed" through the driveshaft, making the sound seem to be in the transmission. Also, the u-joint may be suspect as well.

Read through this thread as well. Your problem is not this severe, but it may still have some issues in common.

Good suggestion Jerry. This test will take you having another person to help, that said with the rear on jack stands & the reverse engaged, not running, does rotating the engine by hand produce the same noise? If your T is equipped with a starter, power off, you may be able to hear the noise using the starter to rotate the engine. Also having another person may help you answer where the noise is actually emanating. Best John

When I got Daisy Mae started the first time I already knew the tranny was worn given 3/8" play in the drum pack, but otherwise appeared decent. The rear end wasn't making any undue noise, so, I opted for a once around the block test drive. Two things noted, delayed clutch engagement, but also a loud sharp clunk seemingly in the tranny, only once or twice, when engaging reverse.
My belief on the clunk was the rear end and immediately tore it down, discovering the DS roller bearing (and pretty much everything else) was so worn the ball bearing pack had grooved the driveshaft from so much side play...the clunk most likely being the pinion and ring gear banging out of mesh in reverse given there was so much slop in the rollers, which Itransmitted up to the tranny.

The clunk was only heard under load on the ground. When the car was on stands, there was no adverse noise nor clunking heard spinning the axle by hand, or, being driven by the engine spinning the free wheels, nor while alternating working all pedal actions. It did not clunk in low or high speed, only reverse, and only under load.

Don't discount the suggestion by Jerry and Kurt.
"Transmission" noises do sometimes come from the rear end.
The inevitable often happens.
