I recently completed rewinding a generator armature. Andre from Belgium and Ron Patterson encouraged me and offered advice to take on this project. Scott Conger offered several recommendations including a technique to eliminate any material shorting the segments. In addition to these people, several electric motor shop owners gave advice and furnished the insulator material. Initially they wanted to throw me out of their shop as soon as I said "winding an automotive armature". They quickly calmed down when I said I only need insulation material and advice.

I anticipated trouble with the routing of the wires. That part was easy. Cleaning the segments and soldering the wire to the segments were difficult.
I am glad that I took on this project just to see if I could do it. Would I do it again. No, I don't even keep a generator on my 23 touring car. The battery gets charged every few hundred miles. The battery is used to start the engine and for brake and turn signal lights. I haven't driven at night in many years and hope to keep it that way. The battery is nearly 4 years old.
