Stewart speedometer
Am I correct that this swivel is made In October 1919 and is a 6:1 ratio? If so would it be correct to use on a 1923 coupe?

Re: Stewart speedometer
I believe that is a left hand drive & the ratio is 2 & 1/2 to 1.

Re: Stewart speedometer
The Stewart Model 1962 swivel is a 6:1 RH ratio. It goes on a 1915-17 Hudson. You need a Model 1913 Stewart swivel for your Ford. I hope this helps. Russ Furstnow

Re: Stewart speedometer
Thanks for the correction, Russ - I was under the impression that Stewart swivels were 2 & 1/2 to 1.

Thank you for that information Russ! I'll be on the lookout for a 1913.

Re: Stewart speedometer
On our RHD cars, the swivel is often mounted on the other side to the LHD cars.Same ratio as the pn 1913 but opposite rotation. If you can't find a decent 1913 swivwl, and your cable and housing is long enough, the swivel can be mounted on the opposite side of the car. Without getting into my spares, I cannot recall the PB for this alternative swivel. Perhaps Russ knows.

Re: Stewart speedometer
Nearly all of the pot metal Stewart swivels look alike, but there are a variety of ratios (from 1:1 to 12:1) and RH and LH types. The 2.5:1 LH part number is Model 1959. Most applications take the Model 1913. I hope this helps, Russ Furstnow

Re: Stewart speedometer
A questions for Russ. The Stewart potmetal swivel housings are the weak link in the Stewart swivels I have found. Can components from LH swivels be swapped into RH swivel housings? Are swivels housings for different ratios interchangeable for other ratio components. This may/may not enable a good swivel to be mix and matched from models.

Re: Stewart speedometer
In my experience, the pot metal housings are interchangeable.

Re: Stewart speedometer
John is correct. The pot metal housings are identical. The inner gears determine the ratio of the unit. I have new sets of gears that turn any Stewart swivel into a 2.5:1 RH swivel. These new gear sets were manufactured using original Stewart gears as a pattern. I hope this helps, Russ Furstnow

Re: Stewart speedometer
Thanks for the confirmation re parts swapping Russ. i suspected it was the case. I guess then that the only difference of consequence is the threaded lower half and the lock nut on the later housings rather than the plain pin with the pressed on collar.
