Glue for 26-27 brake shoes

Post by DHort » Sat Jul 20, 2019 7:10 pm

I have the rivets for the brake shoes, but also would like to glue them down.

What type of glue do you use?

Thank you.

3M Super Weather Strip adhesive in yellow or black is very strong. Available at just about any auto parts store.

Hope this Helps,

Hank

I've heard of people using JB weld to attach the linings to the brake shoes. Glueing them on is completely unnecessary, though. The rivets are plenty good enough.

Stephen, just want to glue them on the ends where they stick up. That will cause some drag. The rivets look good all the way around otherwise.

David, I just did mine and used JB Weld on the ends and clamped them until dried. Working great. Looked at them a few weeks later, all is good.

I had to glue the ends down because they would otherwise continue at a tangent and rub against the drums. I used JB Weld successfully. The photo shows what happened first time round when I didn't bother gluing them.

Having said that, the repro linings did not function as well as the original asbestos type, so I now have modern bonded linings.

I riveted them, but I JB Welded only on the ends..maybe an inch in. Make sure it is all clean bare metal. I blasted my metal and taped the ends so they would remain bare after painting. I riveted them on and pulled gently up on the ends, smeared JB Weld in, and clamped them. Then I ground the the ends at a taper when it was all dry, so the drum doesn't try and peel the ends up. Its worked great so far and was suggested to me by an older club member I trust.
