Ford stamping on front cross member

Post by Mark Osterman » Sun Oct 27, 2019 9:33 am

Funny, I never saw this on the front crossmember of my ‘23 runabout until yesterday when the light happened to rake across it in a parking lot. Any ideas of when this stamping was common on frames.

What the heck is happening there? Was the frame cut to lower it for a speedster? So that was stamped in the center.

Yes that is my speedster/race car. I happened to have a small piece of a cross member that happened to have that stamp on it and I needed something to make the u-bolts to fit correctly, and yes the frame that it is atatched to has the stamp also. Not in the center, they were both just like yours.

I have no idea when Ford started stamping the script in those crossmembers, but most of that practice began in the late teens, where the script started appearing on everything.

The logo was added to the front cross member "about March 19, 1919" according to the encyclopedia.

Boy, that's a really crisp stamping - wish I had the stamp for that size script !

Steve isn’t that the near NOS cross member you found? It’s a nice clean one.

Funny, of all the model T’s I’ve seen over the years I don’t recall seeing that stamping. I guess they are mostly as faint as the one on my car and not like that one Steve posted.

I believe it was NOS. I didn't detect any marks suggesting it had ever been used.
