120 years ago today Charles Miller and Bro. of Washington D.C. placed the following advertisement, “A Car of Model B ….. Just Received.”

A quick check of the Miller Accounts Receivable ledger (compliments of The Henry Ford Museum, all rights apply) reveal several items.

First, we see that on July 3 (first red underline) Ford Motor Co. (FMC) documented $100.00 received for “B.” This is the dealers initial deposit for two Model B.
Second, two days later on the 5th of July, Model B’s #408 and #409 are listed with an amount of $3,446.78 in the “debit” column. These two Model B have shipped (by rail) two days after receipt of the deposit. This tells us FMC is caught up on production (two days from receipt of the order to shipping the cars). It also tells us a “Car” (advertisement) consists of two Model B loaded on a rail car.
Third: we see that the Model B reach Washington D.C. on the 15th of July (or the day before) and payment is procured by Sight Draft, completing the transaction.

Additional information: we see the cost per car to this dealer is $1,723.39 per car (average). With Fords standard 20% dealer discount (commission), the retail cost of these two “B” averages $2,154.24. This tells us one or both cars have additional equipment, resulting in a little over the $2,000 retail cost of Model B.

We now know the shipping (rail) time from Detroit to D.C.) is two weeks or less. We know the dealer probably does not yet have a buyer, but put up the funds to purchase these cars (about $117,000 in today’s value). We also see FMC has produced about 400 of their intended 500 Model B by early July, 1905.
