1916 steering column for sale SOLD

Post by KMcoldcars » Wed Apr 23, 2025 2:48 pm

I have what I believe to be a 1916 steering column for sale.

The 1916 is just the tube itself. It does have the small tube underneath for one horn wire and two holes for mounting the horn button. The quadrant is in very nice condition but will need to be riveted onto the column. There are no dents that I have noticed and only some light surface rust.
I have no idea what it is worth and will listen to any offers.

I own a 1936 Packard convertible sedan, a 1916 Model T coupelet, and a 2007 Mercedes Benz SL550 roadster.

That style column tube was used for nearly three years actually. Beginning in late 1914, ONLY for center-door sedans and couplets, it may have been used on some cars. I am not sure about the earliest ones which would have gotten the cast brass spark and throttle quadrant, they might have been a bit shorter in length for the cast quadrants? Only the center-door sedans and couplets got the electric horns before about June of 1915. The cast brass quadrants were commonly used before calendar 1915, and occasionally used on some open cars (especially the late built 1914 style cars into April 1915!).
While evidence indicates that some open cars were getting bulb horns as late as the end of August or even later in 1915? Most model Ts were getting the electric horn by mid August.
That column tube would be correct for any model T from about September 1915 all through 1916 and still through most of the 1917 model year. Late 1917 calendar year, somewhere early for the 1918 model year, Ford went to the bigger combination horn-light switch which was used for somewhat more than a year. Closed cars first, early in the 1919 model year (late 1918 calendar year) got the electrics package (starter etcetera) as standard equipment. Open cars began offering the electrics package as an option about Spring of 1919. For awhile, open cars not getting the electrics package continued to get the combination horn-light switch which used a larger wire tube for the multiple wires needed for the lights. TT trucks appear to have gotten the combination switch into late calendar 1919.

The spark and throttle levers changed somewhere between late 1915 and early 1916, The 1915 style had larger paddles on them, many had a cross hatch stamped into the larger flatish area. Early 1916s had a small interim "button" shape pressed onto the ends, it was a bit crude and looked like an afterthought. I don't know how long those continued, but soon after that the "button" became a bit larger and more smoothly transitioned onto the steel rod. I have not seen many of those early 1916 style, I think I may still have one, and have seen a few others over the years.

In short. With different S/T levers, that column tube should be correct for some 1915 models, and basically all 1916 and 1917 model year Ts.
