No longer looking: four brass twist oilers - preferably orignals with patina

Post by Walt Wise » Mon May 06, 2024 5:45 pm

I am looking for four brass twist oilers, preferably originals with patina - not brilliant shiny gold brass. Most of the vendors sell them new, part number 3817, but I don't want new and shiny. However, I do want them to have a working spring. These are the oilers of course that go in shackles, king pins, etc. Let me know what you have and some pics Please. Send me an email or PM through this site. Much Thanks!!! Walt Wise

Mr. Wise, it’s not quite as pretty as true patina, but Brass Black by Birchwood Casey works pretty good if you rub it on and then polish it off a few times. Dulls it good and gives it a dark brown realistic looking patina with some experimenting. I agree though that true age can’t be beat!

The oilers on eBay are steel, not brass, with the original oxidized factory finish. Those are the later style - my unrestored '17 has them on the figure eight shackles. I also have some NOS ones in my secret stash.

PS: If you polish 100 year old brass, it's still 100 years old when you are finished.

I have 2 original unrestored and tarnished oilers I just removed from my 1915 Gallivan powered speedster.. I am replacing them with zerk fittings. I can email photos to you if you are still looking. These are near perfect, no plier marks and both tops still work and spring loaded.
