Different style Ford Transmission Band demountable ear- Has anyone ever seen this?

I was going through my transmission bands and found this. It appears that the mechanism to turn his damage on the top. I used a punch and did slight damage on the bottom too get it to come off. I suppose this could’ve been something that someone made after the fact using Ford parts if so, they definitely had some good skills. Has anyone ever seen one of these or have information on it?

Yes. Its a brilliant concept. Easier to lock the ear than ford made demountables. Works well in the confined spaces of aluminum HH's.
Its a modified Ford non demountable band modified into a demountable format. Note the ford script on both ears.
I think a company did the modification on their stock of cores & you exchanged your non D bands.
The T shaped locking tab has moved on yours. Normally they are swedged @ about a 45 degrees. When in position to use, the tabs are under the band locked in place.

Thanks for sharing Dave Young’s post!

Does anyone have more information on these? Is there any period literature that mentions them?

Mine were rusted, so it was very difficult to turn the locking mechanism. But even in the best-case scenario, I still don’t see how the ear was intended to be removed. I’m wondering if this was Ford’s answer to avoiding lawsuits over patent infringement?

Have yet to run across that style in any period adv.

Perhaps some aftermarket co. made, but odd with using Ford band ear forging marked.

Perhaps Ford made these as attempt at a demountable band and gave up? Seems a few sets have appeared. As Trent posted on the earlier thread, likely experimental Ford parts for the detachable band designs.


However, Raybestos made a similar tongue lock type, but it is fixed tongue, and function seems a bit better way to lock the band ear.

Now when Ford introduced demountable bands in May, 1925, there was a suit filed by Parks and Bohne, as they were on the market with same style post mounting ears that were patented.

But Ford prevailed in the contest, and didn't have to pay any damages as the P&B patent was ruled invalid as Ford proved there was already prior art in the field of detachable parts.

However, due to the potential risk of lost in the suit, Ford did make the change from the post mounting to the tongue lug style ear, in 1926 and most all bands in 1927 model year are the lug version.

I know for a fact the 2927 tongue lug style demountable transmission band will not fit through the inspection cover opening on an aluminum transmission cover.

That was a frustrating lesson to learn!
