16 Touring top pad replacement

Post by mark30h » Wed Sep 23, 2020 3:45 pm

Is it possible to replace top pads without fully removing the top? We put the top on my 16 50 years ago, and the covering is still in excellent shape, except for some minor discoloration of the rear window. Its always been stored up, except for stupidly leaving it down last winter, when a rodent helped itself to one of the pads. My dad and installed the top when we restored the car, and for sentimental reasons,I'm wondering if its possible to brace the bows, remove the tacks partially on one side enough to expose the pad, and replace it.

You probably could, or if you're nervous about doing it, a local upholsterer could tackle it.

I think I'm going to replace just the pad. I know that when we did the top , no glues were used , so if I get a pad kit, and some new tacks for the covering, I should be ok.

 I don't see a problem. I would do one side at a time. Looks like that top was expertly done all those years ago.
