What size allen wrench to drain differential?

Post by DHort » Tue Jul 06, 2021 9:50 am

My friend needs to check his differential. I did not realize that a 27 needs an allen wrench to open the drain on his car. Can you tell me what size wrench I need? ........If it has been a long time and it does not want to loosen up, what is the best way to get that loose? I do not know if I want to heat that area or if I should just try an extension (pipe) on the wrench.

Shouldn't be an allen - isn't it square ? Should just take a 3/8" ratchet.

Should be a square hole, not allen wrench, unless someone has installed a different plug. 3/8" socket wrench should work if square hole.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

The later Ford script adjustable wrenches have a square boss on the end of the handle for use with the Model T and Model A differential plug.

Mine may have once been 3/8" square, but it's more like 7/16" now.

Bung wrench. A handy addition to any toolbox!

Standard 1/2" NPT plugs are sold with a 3/8" hex size if that is what is in there.

When did I do that?

I will have to look closer. Just assumed it was a hole for an Allen wrench. Ratchet will be a lot easier. Thanks everyone.
