Does anyone have a good pic of the Stewart Speedometer Drive Installation on the R/H front spindle (wire wheels) of a 1927 Ford?
I have a complete kit, and it appears it mounts on the FRONT side of the axle, sticking out into where the car is headed, and after seeing all the pics of the speedo mounts BEHIND the axle, where they are shielded from rocks and impacts, I find it hard to believe that Stewart wanted the drive gear to be mounted AHEAD of the axle.
Anyone have a pic, or can straighten me out on this?
Thanks!

There were a number of different mountings, including a long bolt with shank that mounted in place of the spindle arm nut in front of the axle that was used by Stewart. Front or back, going to get about the same amount of mud, water, dust etc thrown on it. There was just a posting about mounting the Stewart 490; viewtopic.php?f=2&t=25008
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Mark is correct, front of the axle or behind, both were used. Russ Furstnow's speedo book is a good reference, but over time there are many adaptions/variations/dealer stuff ups, so you really are free to set it up as you please. Throw in a Nash or Patterson drive does away with all that complicated mount/swivel/cabling out front.
Hope this helps.

Here is a copy of the installation from the "Stewart Installation Guide". I understand that your car has wire wheels and the road gear is drilled in the spokes for the installation, but you can see how the swivel is mounted to the axle. I hope this helps, Russ Furstnow

The straight cut gear setup mounted in front of the axle on the extension stud. The spiral cut setup mounted on or slightly behind the spindle bolt part of the spindle.
