Issues with Gen cutout

Post by NY John T » Mon Nov 22, 2021 9:46 am

Hi all,
While trying to start my 23-26 frankenT, the wire on the cutout started to smoke. The tab for the generator wire was touching the generator since the tab has been bent down. The tab is now loose. Has anyone taken the cutout apart, and can it be repaired? I'm trying to keep it all original and was wondering if I can take the whole thing apart and return it to service. It has the nice Ford script on the top. Did I do any damage to the generator as well? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
John

Bummer, John; I've taken one original Ford cutout apart and reconnected the voltage coil (fine wire coil) with success. The MTFCA Electrical guidebook has some useful info in this regard. If the failure is in the insulating sheet at the base of the coils, that will require more work than mine did, but at this point if the thing is completely fried you have little to loose and much to learn in the process. I assume you know how to remove the cover? it is spot-welded to the base at the bottom. I used a round file to remove enough of the weld so I could separate the cover from the base with a small thin screwdriver. As always, YMMV, good luck, jb

John, Any relativity to the short & your inability to test your non-working coils? That smoking wire may have caused an open in the smaller yellow battery voltage feed wire to the junction block on the firewall. That feed wire starts at the "hot" side of the "foot" starter switch. As Ford never provided any fuse protection on a Model T that is an excellent place to add a fuse holder & a 20 amp. fuse. Many times the wires on the junction blocks are loose & the terminals dirty (corroded). If the internal cutout wiring is "burnt" open, the cutout cover can be removed as James said, the cutout can be fitted with a Diode available from any Model T parts supplier, instructions sometimes come with the diode or can be found here on the Forum. The absolute best voltage regulation is in the form of the former "Fun Projects" voltage regulator unfortunately after John Regan who developed the regulator that looked like a cutout on the outside sold "Fun Projects" the new owners have not been able to provide any replacements.
