I really don’t think he was worried about keeping the brass radiator cleaned and polished! The roller must have been really geared down to use it. I have an idea that the rollers could be water filled for the weight.

If that transmission is set in low, with the reduction to the rear axle and the chain sprocket reduction, I bet that was a VERY powerful machine.
Obviously, the owner had experience with those big farm threshing engines, with their post steering using chains.
Many (if not most) early road rollers used water drums for the rollers. It made the roller easier to transport, and you could fill it up with a garden hose and it was ready to flatten right then. When you were done, stop it so the plug is at the bottom of the wheel rim, let it all drain out, then load it up to take it to the next job. You could probably move this one on a Model T Flatbed truck with no trouble at all. Whoever built this did a very nice job!
