TT Green body paint ??

Post by CraneJon » Thu Apr 14, 2022 8:16 pm

What paint are the TT guys using for the wood. Green looks a like it is flat?? Oil or latex? flat satin or semi-gloss?? Brand? Shade of green?

Thank you

Ask Dallas. He has an excellent green on his truck.

Ford didn't sell TT's with wood bodies, so there is no factory correct color for those. But of course many of those aftermarket wood bodies were painted various greens. I did a little internet search and found remarkably few good photos, but I have a couple in my files.

I am not recommending a brand or type, just taking a stab at the color. And as discussed one brand of HUNTER GREEN may not look like another

A suggestion: Our Christmas train was painted with Red Devil Hunter Green in the early '60s. It's still original paint. If it will/has lasted for 60 years, it's got to be a contender at least. When I was done with a needed repair, in 1996, we purchased the Red Devil paint and it matched the original paint exactly. I am still impressed with the consistency of the color after all those years.

Good Luck,
Terry

Thought I'd add the Red Devil Hunter Green to my posting... Looks like they no longer have a paint product line - just patch & repair pastes & tools.

Then I wondered about Rust-oleum and who owned them mostly because local Farm Supply carried both Rust-oleum and Varathane and dropped Varathane last year  Well here is it is RPM International and the brands they own!

This was on my speedster but the rust oleum Hunter Green holds up well and if you want it a little darker I they sell the half pints of black to add in.

Frank,

What a shock your post was. I did not know Red Devil paint was no longer on the market. I found a can of ours. Thompson & Formby Inc. Memphis, TN is on the can as the manufacturer. I found an old MSDS for Red Devil paint that was authored by the Sherwin Williams Co. I am unable to find any solid history of the Red Devil paint company other than the above. My guess is the company was acquired by Sherwin Williams and absorbed/dissolved into their conglomerate. Too bad! I really liked that paint.

Thanks for letting us know Red Devil paint is no longer alive and well.
