Removal of 1926 fuel cover on cowling

How do you remove the cowling fuel cap hinged cover? 1926.

Two screws on the hinge go thru the cowl and are held by two nuts. All are accessible with the gas door open.

Accessible and removable are mutually exclusive, in my opinion. I could not get enough of a grip on screw heads to loosen them. Maybe soaking in Kroil will help.

Try 50/50 Acetone and ATF mix. Works better than commercial penetrating oils.

Never turn a screw or bolt if it has a nut. Always hold the head hard with a well fitting driver and turn the nut. If it is a screw only, tap it as you turn in to assist breaking it loose, then tap as you loosen it.

Using this formula, do you mix it up as you need? My thoughts are that the acetone would flash off if not kept in an air tight container.

Sean: I've got some in a pump type oil can and after 5 years it smells good and works well. You do need a closed container/oil can to reduce acetone evaporation, but the pump can does this. jb

Thanks James. I do have couple gallons of Kroll, but, as you are well aware, a couple gallons won't last forever when working on old stuff.
