Have you measured the OD of a 3/8-16 helicoil/thread insert tap?
If I was home I would measure one. If you dont have one, take your caliper over to Hilco.
Something in the back of my head spoke to me. They arent as hard to get as you would think.

Edit: Further investigation. The helicoil tap would be to big. It would work for a 7/16-16 bolt (Harley)
I gotta learn to ignore those voices.

The axle housing halves have a "special" thread that the d.s. spool studs/bolts use
