Installing a ruckstell
I am planning on installing a ruckstell in my 24. Will be getting a kit from one of the parts suppliers. The car currently drives well with no rear end noise or issues at all. Whit that being said what should I expect at the least, other parts should I plan on. I know I have to replace the thrust washers. I’m almost certain they are Babbitt. Thanks for all the input .

In all honesty, you can't really plan on anything. I've never taken apart a rear end yet that didn't have more wrong with it than I expected. You just don't know until you have a look inside. BTW, you'll only need one bronze thrust washer, the Ruckstell will have a ball bearing to replace the left side washer.

Like Jerry said, there’s always something. A new Ruckstell kit is a big investment, I wouldn’t hesitate to replace the axles and probably use a roller pinion bearing.

One thing not mentioned above, is the fiber or bronze spacer between the two axles inside the differential. It should be snug without binding or end play in the axles. You won't know the condition of the gears or other bearings until you get it apart. If they are good it is very good to use the original Hyatt bearings. Sometimes the inner bearings can be swapped with the outer bearings. The best set should be used for the outside bearings. Also new sleeves are a good investment. You should also check the alignment of the two axle housings. Sometimes they get bent from use, or misuse, such as jacking the axle in the center or strapping down near the center. The axles should be centered when everything is bolted together. If they tend to run to one side or lower or higher in the housing, it needs to be straightened or replaced with a better one. The driveshaft bearing is easy to replace if in good condition. You will need a good spool for the outside to ride on and the inner sleeve must be pulled off. The new sleeve must be heated and then quickly placed on the driveshaft while still hot. and the notch for the keyway must be aligned. so do it quickly and try hard to get it lined up right the first time. Also the key must be snug in both the driveshaft and in the gear. The clearances between gears can be adjusted by either placing a gasket or omitting one between the sleeve and the thrust gear. This will adjust the pinion gear which must be aligned with the ring gear. Since the carrier has a large ball bearing on the driven side, you can only adjust the ring gear, by adding or deleting steel shims. Be sure all bolts are tight and wired in place. The wire should be placed in such a position, that if the bolt rotates to loosen, it will pull the wire tighter. That way, the wire will keep the bolt tight.

Are you in martinsville va? If so, I’m over in Salem. I bought a new ruckstell from chaffins. Planning on building it here pretty soon for my 24 touring.
