Thank you Forum Guru’s Mag Post Issue
Thanx to the knowledge on this forum, I was able to quickly troubleshoot a mag issue today. Yesterday, after finish assembly of the Time Machine, I took it for a shakedown cruise of about 15 miles. After a normal shift into Hi the engine quit and I coasted to a stop. I switched to BAT and got a nice “free start”. Switching to MAG the engine quit again. I stewed half the night fretting what it could be and the logical assessment steps. This morning I scoured the forum for Mag issues and stumbled onto the thread about the bulb socket and leads to test the mag. I purchased the necessary components at CarQuest and made the tester. It took all of about 1 minute to remove the top floorboard and clip the tester on. No light meant bad mag or mag post. I had a spare that I installed and got a nice bright light at hi idle. Boy was I happy that the mag was still good. I was dreading what I thought might be half a day of testing switch, wiring, etc. For anyone interested in building this simple tester, here are the CarQuest numbers. Total was just over $12 including (3) 1156 bulbs.
