First Stromberg OF needle fresh off of assembly jig - New Pix, New Needle

Post by Scott_Conger » Tue Jun 29, 2021 11:21 am

I have an OF body which was sold to me on the cheap because the low speed and high speed needles were missing from it. The only place to get replacements would be from another Stromberg, right? Wrong. I felt that it would be a shame to leave it in that condition and felt there would be no net gain to my stable by stripping another OF to save this one, so I have replicated them. This one is complete and the fuel needle will be completed later in the week once a special reamer shows up via the UPS gal.

Enjoy

And the longer needle shouldn’t be a problem?

not at all

in fact, the long needles are already in stock...just waiting on a special diameter reamer to fit them to the adjuster

Looks like the body has been machined out of one piece and the needle inserted. Is there a rivet that holds it all together? Nice work, very delicate.

Thanks Rich
No rivets
assembled just like the original

there is some small variability in dimensions on 8 original parts which were inspected, with a couple of dimensions being critical. All my dimensions are tightly controlled around nominal values with small tolerances, which keep variability of the new parts within the population of old parts in hand. Certain critical dimensions are controlled very tightly

I would be interested in these parts. My car came with this carb, and I am planning to rebuild it when the snow flies. Running a straight through NH now. Please keep us updated Scott. Cheers, Bill

The last Strombergs came with machine broached wells and diamond knurled adjuster heads...I think they are a nicer looking part and are easier to grip. Sorry for the terrible background and color... :(

Wow.
I wonder if in many decades in the future the Model T enthusiasts will even know the things that were done to keep stuff running.

Scott, Wow, that is some beautiful work!! I watched the OF that was on EBay for months with the missing needles and thought it sure would be nice if somebody starting making some.

Nice Job, I prefer the earlier style knurl

Hello Gene

there is one on eBay right now that is packed with mud, missing needles and throttle arm for only $280. :? When they're dug out of the ground like that at a junkyard, they are often not worth the effort to try to disassemble unless you have unlimited time on your hands or are very lucky. Right now, the throttle arm replacement is a problem.

And a quick look shows it sold 2 days ago.

Beautiful work, thanks for showing. It took me two days to fabricate the bracket that holds the choke adjusting cable on my OF. Had to cut the blank from sheet steel with a jewelers saw, then drill and bend a complex shape. But it’s noting like seeing your expert machine work.

Bill Hoffer

If you have a complete Stromberg, you do not need these as they are not an item which wears out. I appreciate the sentiment and your interest, but don't want to foist something on someone if it isn't a needed part.

To all: thank you for the comments. They were an interesting project. The remainder of the run are listed in the Classifieds.
