Door kick panels

What are the plain uncovered cardboard panels on a touring 22, finished with? Paint? Some coating? What did you use?

Just the untreated, uncovered panel is it.

These old ones from a 1924 or so might give some idea.

The 'Barn fresh' '23 pickup, bought std. door cardboard, in black finish, from on-line auto upholstery source. Board came in std flat size perhaps 30" square or so?

The panel board was pebble like grain, the Ford panels were also pebble grain, but don't think you can get that same pattern today.

So to 'age' the new board, spray painted spots in flat or semi gloss rattle can, and rubbed with steel wool to depress the new shiny board, came out looking like it had been there for a long time

I wish the trim for the door latches had more to bend over! There really isn't enough to do the job.
