Where to buy extra large head carriage bolt

Post by Matt in California » Sun Oct 30, 2022 12:01 am

I am working on my Martin Perry project. It is missing a few of these. Anyone have a suggestion where I can find a replacement?

Matt, I have restored to bronze welding a washer under the bolt head and dressing them down to suit. Works ok if you only need one or two.

You might try looking at elevator bolts. They are pretty close to what you are looking for, but they seem to vary by the manufacturer, the head profile differs a bit (from manufacturer to manufacturer). I needed some when attaching a Kari-Keen trunk to my Model A.

Do a search for "step bolts".

Try Grainger - & its step bolts that have the wider head
https://www.grainger.com/category/faste ... step-bolts
There are also Timber bolts but harder to find
They are different as the underside is not square https://www.portlandbolt.com/products/bolts/timber/

I would agree the STEP BOLTS are closer in appearance to the original. All the ELEVATOR BOLTS that I have seen used on conveyor equipment in grain elevators, have a large diameter head, but they are flat and not 'domed'.

Do you need 5/16" or 3/8" step bolts? How many do you need? I may be able to help.

Wow I appreciate all the offers for help!

I started at Ace Hardware and asked the staff a while back and they said they didn’t have those. I recently met the “bolt guy” that actually stocks the bolts for all the stores he also confirmed that they don’t carry it. The guy actually mentioned that I could try other locations that may have old stock.

The project is stored offsite but here are two bolts (in top of photo) that I took off. I believe they were both used to hold a fender bracket. One has a square that you normally find under a carriage bowl. The other one barely has a rib. Is that a timber bolt? In any case one of them must’ve been replaced. Does anyone know what Martin Perry originally used?

The originals were cut off by a previous owner. I happen to have one bolt that would work as a replacement. It is 2 1/4 inches long and 5/16 diameter.

Thanks!

Matt

Check out Blacksmith Bolt as well. https://www.blacksmithbolt.com/ I use them for proper milled wood screws in my pump organ repairs.
