A/C Brakes

Post by Dave Loving » Mon May 19, 2025 7:46 pm

I have acquired a CenterDoor with A/C Brakes that I am totally unfamiliar with.
Does it look like they are mounted correctly?
How do I go about adjusting them?
Thanks,
Dave

In the process of putting AC Brakes on my Tudor. I'm leaning towards cable set up instead of rods but weighing the pros and cons.

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Hi David,
They have a adjuster nut to set the band adjustment. They ( new reproduction) have a eyelet that lends better to using rods. When I set mine up
in the beginning I used a clevis & made the cables out of 60's Chevy truck parking brake cables as they have a 5/16" fine threaded end on them
giving a more flexible adjustment options other than a turnbuckle coming off the pedal. I later switched to rods but the only change I noticed
was they rattle a lot.
Craig.

Original AC brakes used a cable, as did Rocky Mountains! People who make reproductions almost always seem to change the original design!

I installed AC brakes (well repro). I also moved my handbrake back a bit. I really wanted to use cables, but I also wanted straighter less angled pull on the AC brakes and original brakes. So I moved the original brake levers out by a few inches by welding in some round bar to the handbrake. Then I made a crank for the AC brakes on a pivot so they self balance and took a rod from that to the brake pedal.

This all sounds complicated and yes it does rattle, must put in some rubber pipe in places to dampen that, but it does work well. If anyone is interested, I will grab photos.

My repro handbrakes were not cast well, I had to mess a fair bit with them to get them to line up on the drum properly.
