OT - Old Photo - Pre T Ford...Possibly Model S

Post by Lyndon » Wed Feb 13, 2019 8:42 am

Just decided to post another picture. I have not posted one since before Christmas. This is one of my favorite pictures of my early Fords. A very well equipped car. Please give me some information on the car. I know very little about these early Fords.

I enjoy the NRS's too. I'm currently doing a Painting from Herb's photo. The top at "Half mast" always gives me a chuckle. You can only do that with tops with side supports. I can tell you that those Gray & Davis bullet head and side lamps are darn hard to find nowadays. They only used them until '06 I believe. It is a delightful photo.
Thanks
Rich
When did I do that?

Wouldn't an R or S have running boards? Since this car doesn't, I wonder if it isn't a well optioned Model N.

Mark,
Yes, a nicely appointed N. driving with the top partially down (or up) is a nice way to break the wind and let the sun warm you. Obviously not recommended on windy days or at speed.

It’s an N.

The first give away is the fenders. The plow share fenders were only used on the Model N. Since it does not have running boards, a step plate is used instead (barely visible behind the end of the fron fender).

Second are the bail sidelights. These disappeared in 1907-08 for the Model N. Models R, S Runabout and S Roadsters used later style lamps, such as the flare side E & J s.

Third, note the “toy” horn mounted on the steering column. Model R and S cars used larger dash mounted horns similar to those found on early brass era Ts.

Fourth, note the radiator and cap. The radiator cap screws on to the neck, which Is typical of 1907-08 cars. The early Model N’s used what has been called a lightbulb radiator cap because the threads on the cap are similar to those found on incandescent lightbulbs. The threads on the cap screw into the radiator neck.

It looks like the was in very original condition. Ish I had a time machine so I could go back and examine it more closely.

Respectfully submitted,

Trent Boggess

Thanks to everyone for all the input. This is how I (we all) learn from all you knowledgeable folks. On the Banner (flag) it has ELKHORN 09. This could possibly be when the picture was taken. As I look at the people in the photo, I see a resemblance in the people pictured. Possibly mother, daughter and son. Or sister, sister and brother. Good looking family.

The Elkhorn 09 banner is stuck in what looks like the base of the mount for a search/driving light on the center of the dash.
Ford shipped some with a single driving light mounted on the dash front, a single gas lamp and maybe a MC POL tank.
Those are small headlamps and an MC would handle them both with the driving light off.
We will never know but fun looking at such great detail.

Great picture, chains too!

The Elkhorn banner, Is that a college? May be a gift from dad.
