Wondered why play in U-joint

Getting to take down the ‘25 rear axle. The u/joint rocked with a suspicious click. So drove out what should be a long rivet

Perhaps more worked needed, knew the axle shafts were worn at tapered end and with poor threads, so have to replace those at a minimum.

Good news, ring gear is nice, bronze thrusts, solid roller bearings, I replace with Hyatt.

Good/Bad. Pinion gear super too, original Hyatt roller pinion bearing cage lossie goosie. Will replace that with modern pinion bearing set.

Well, that Hyatt pinion has more than a loose cage, so this is why that bearing wiggled!

For years my speedster has a hesitation during heavy acceleration... couldn’t figure it out...?! I went thru the Ruxtell 3-4 times for various reasons before I thought to take the driveline apart. The Hyatt pinion bearing came out about 3/4” long!!!

Under high loads the pinion bearing was breaking off little pieces of the coils, and passing em thru the gear set... turns out my hesitation under load wasn’t ignition related after all...?!

Well, yes Scott. The '25 Coupe. But I knew it was an older restoration from 1982.

Seems some of the parts used were either worn originals, or what may have been best replacement at the time, but I want better for touring with the Coupe.

Today got the axle apart, the torque tube nose has wallowed out holes for the radius rods, and the rods have that worn section of thread from being loose. So replacing the tube.....and both radius rods. BTY, it had the original Babbitt front bushing.

Drive shaft is bad, as the Hyatt race sleeve wasn't secure, it rocks too, that nice pinion gear was rocking a little with it!

Note how the sleeve can be finger rotated

Off with the bad boy! Being replaced with Modern Pinion bearing set.

Guess am a bit younger than so since I bought that at Sears Robuck in Memphis new in the sixties.

Rest of the tear out....outer sleeve worn down, and no optical illusion , that solid roller bearing is leaning like the Tower of Pizza , loose cage and wear.

Also had the leather type inner seal with the axle shaft biting claws
