Click on your username in the upper right. Select "user control panel". One of the options will be to add an Avatar. Be aware that the picture you select to be your Avatar must be shrunk down to no more than 90 pixels high and wide.

Maximum dimensions; width: 90 pixels, height: 90 pixels, file size: 21.00 KiB.
I tried it but by time I got it down to 90X90 it was still 36+ KB and no longer in focus. I was going to wait till the dust settles and send a note to Chris to see it it could be changed.
Click on you name, when the window opens you will see edit profile after your name, click that. In the new window that opens the profile tab will be open, edit avatar is in the drop down on the left, click on it.

Re: Member information block at the right
Mark, I think you need to start with a full size photo. I picked one 3468 pixels wide where the car filled a lot of the picture. I made a copy and cropped it to cut out most of the stuff on either side of the car. That left me with a picture 1560 pixels wide, which I resized to 90. That tiny size can't show any detail no matter what you do, but I think starting with the biggest original file you can find will get it as good as it's going to get. I started with this.
The inevitable often happens.

You nailed it Steve.
Starting with the highest resolution photo possible is the key to a clear Avatar photo.

I started with an iphone photo, put it into paint, stretch skew to 20% , saved that then did it again to 90%. Sure is small

Re: Member information block at the right
When resizing a photo to 90 pixels, reduce the largest dimension to 90 and let the other fall where it may.... Usually there is a command like "constrain proportions." If you don't do so, your photo may end up out of proportion.
