Blockley 30 x 3 tyres

Post by Steve Jelf » Sat Feb 20, 2021 4:27 pm

Some folks have been waiting a long time. The new 30 x 3 tyres are now on the Blockley website. They're £149, same as the 30 x 3½.

Great news ! Thanks for posting that, Steve. I'm sure more information will follow as to how we colonials can order them, expected delivery times, and the actual cost, delivered.

At the current exchange rate, that's $250.53 U$D. I'm sure that for good quality, most T owners would spring for that.

You need to add shipping charges and import duty (%tax charged is on the total of the cost of items + shipping ) might be 3.4% or 0 if they were made in the UK

I'm wondering if one of the big vendors will order a consignment of these. That would probably bring the shipping cost per tire down a little.

This reference says $208.75. https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/co ... GBP&To=USD
Of course the exchange rate constantly fluctuates. When I checked last year I think it was £1 = $1.14. Now the pound is at $1.40, and soon it will be something else./

The last time Blockley tires were discussed on the forum I did some casual internet research and, if I recall correctly, they are made in Vietnam.

It would be great if the 30 x 3 and 30 x 3.5 Dunlop Cord chevron tread tires were being reproduced. They are true dimension, not oversize and look great on a Model T Ford.

Dunlop got out of the vintage tire business not too long ago but tires using their molds are being manufactured under the "Ensign" name. Universal is the distributor for Ensign in the U.S. Don't know who actually manufacturers Ensign tires, where they are made, or if they are planning on making the 30 x 3 and 30 x 3.5 Dunlop Cord chevrons.

I am currently working with the CEO of Blockley, Julian, to see if it would be more cost effective for me to become the US dealer for Blockley tires just pertaining to model t tire sizes. We are working out shipping prices and how many to send over in the first batch. With my ups account, shipping would cost less than when the model t suppliers ship tires..... I think its about $20 less in shipping in US from me to anywhere in US. I have decent shipping rates into Canada too. I'll keep you posted when I know more. Their is apparently a worldwide shortage of shipping container and shipping overseas has gone up 5 times compared to before covid.

Quite so, but they are made to Blockey specifications. There are factories in Vietnam, Taiwan, China, etc., perfectly capable of turning out quality products. They make what the suits in the USA and other countries order from them.

Steve, you are being very kind. I would have said, "They can make anything to the specifications of those who place the order." If you order rubbish product, you get rubbish product. Blockley have recognised this in the clincher tyre market, and to their credit, they have sought to change the situation. With a quality product available, the market may now dictate the situation rather than the dealers/importers.

But then there is the the amount to ship to your customer.

The cost per tire when shipping 50 at a time is much less than shipping 4. There will also be a duty charge that is determined by where the product was made (Vietnam), not where it was purchased from (UK). Realistically, the overhead cost of importing tires is likely the same for those sold by Coker and others.

December 30, 2020 Contact: Office of Public Affairs
WASHINGTON - Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced affirmative preliminary determinations in the antidumping duty (AD) investigations of passenger vehicle and light truck tires (passenger tires) from South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Commerce preliminarily determined that exporters have dumped passenger tires in the United States at rates of 14.24 to 38.07 percent for South Korea, 52.42 to 98.44 percent for Taiwan, 13.25 to 22.21 percent for Thailand, and 0 to 22.30 percent for Vietnam.

Frank, presumably they are looking to protect US tyre interests. With no US manufacturer of clincher tyres, there should be no countervailing duties on Vietnamese imports, but logic may not necessarily apply.
If Blockley follow the US clincher tyre dealers' lead, the tyres will have to go to England and be re-shipped to USA. That is what happened when we in Australia needed New Zealand made Firestone tyres. They had to come from USA.

Not concerned with the cost of the tires just the shipping and any import fees. Can you share?

I was told the clincherss have a separate duty classification since they technically cannot be sold for auto use in the USA - Not DOT approved. Often a small shipment will go through with no duty. Larger quantities who knows.

Import duties are charged on shipments valued over a certain amount. I believe when I checked it was $500, but that was last year. I don't know whether that would make the total cost lower if tires were shipped singly instead of together.

One other feature of the Blockley Tyre is the red marking on the side of the Tyre indicating the lightest
area and when fitting them you align this to the Valve. Not that wheel balance is a real issue with most T’s but it shows
a attention to detail of the Blockley brand.

I learned a lesson in purchasing some goods from the UK that were made in China and had to pay a hefty import fee. I am only recapping some information from discussions with my Importer - FedEX. So not all of this information may be correct - but as they say "Buyer be aware"
Tariffs are determined on Country of Origin and not Country of Purchase https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import- ... -purchases
There is also a difference in calculations and allowances for bringing in goods from a vacation, accompanied versus non-accompanied shipped to you even as a result of a vacation. Internet Purchases https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import- ... -purchases

The issue with determining the Tariff on the 30 x 3 tires is that they don't exactly fit a description one of the Tire descriptions https://hts.usitc.gov/?query=tires.
In reading etc they could be listed as "other" and be taxed at 3.4% (on the total including shipping) or if the description were to imply motorcycle tires - no tax.
