Generator Mounting Bolts
My non running, new to me, 1924 TT has a starter and a generator block off plate. I'm not sure why someone put the plate on it? I bought a used generator and need the mounting bolts to get it hooked up. Are the bolts something that I can pick up at the hardware store if so what size, or do I need to order a set from one the dealers?

If the engine never had the starter or generator from the factory, that is why the block off plates would be there or someone may have removed them later (for some reason, non-working?) and then installed the block off plates. As for the bolts, I believe they are 7/16 - 20 (a 5/8 head instead of a more standard 9/16) but I do not remember the length (2 the same length and one longer) and you should be able to pick them up at the local hardware (I am sure someone will post with the correct length). If the block off plate was mounted in place, the three mounting bolts for that should be the correct ones, I would check those first. Instead of nuts, they would thread into the front of the generator.

If you use modern bolts they will most likely be cad plated and won't hold paint. I strip off the plating with muriatic acid. If you do that, wear gloves and be careful not to breathe the fumes. I also grind off the modern markings and buff the head smooth. The modern bolts are not a perfect match for the originals, but most people won't know the difference.

I think two of the bolts are standard type. The longer one which also holds the timer spring in place has a larger, but thinner head.

Dan is correct, same bolts hold on the block off plate, just add some nuts.

Looks like I'm missing a bolt or two. I don't have much history on the truck other than it ran before it was parked after the owner died.
I wonder why someone would remove the generator on a starter engine? Did they not want to pay to get a new one and go back to hand starting?
Did they come from the factory with a starter and no generator?

Scott, look at the ignition switch panel, if there is an ammeter it came with a starter and a generator, if there is a blank plate where the ammeter goes it came without a starter and without a generator. Starters, generators, ammeters, and electric tail lamps ALWAYS go together as a set. If you have an incomplete combination of those items something was removed or added during its lifetime.The non starter cars came from the factory with blanking pates, a special ignition switch panel with a magneto headlight dimmer thing and oil side lamps and oil tail lamp.

Ummm, ya... My truck is a mish-mash of years and parts. The switch is on the coil box with no ammeter. I'm pretty sure the engine is a replacement.
