What are the dates of use of this 2 Piece Driveshaft? I think its pre 1913

Post by Benji » Thu Mar 18, 2021 1:44 am

Im working on a January 1913 Roadster build and i have 2 different 2 piece driveshafts. This one is earlier than the other drive shaft I have based on the Judging Guidelines/ Roddas books.

I'm curious if anyone may know the specific use dates of this particular 2 piece driveshaft of mine, meaning would it be more appropriate for a 1912 or earlier, or would this type be used into the 1913 calender year (January 1913). Im still a little stuck on "early" and "late" term.
Do they mean early calender year, or model year? And so forth.

It has the Patd cast in one side on the ball end. The thick brazed grease cup flange.
Based on Rodda this is a 1909 to early 1910 ball end. (I have it compared to a "newer" style in a picture)
A no bump pinion bearing spool, so again, based on Rodda, 1910 to 1912 This particular spool is interesting as it was not jigged correctly and was twisted to one side, so the bearing spool bolts aren't concentric with the casting. Even the plug area is offset.

I forgot to measure the stud hole diameter to see if its 3/8 or the later 13/32 now that I think of it. The best I can surmise is that its definitely a 1910 2 piece based on parts alone. Until I measure the stud holes and compare it to my later bearing spool hole diameter, I won't know if it's post 1911.

for what its worth. I have a very early 15 wide track roadster with a 13 cast date rear end & 2 piece drive shaft. being a rare variation, i believe it came so equipped from the factory. last in first out inventory. ford got into the bottom of the pile of a slow moving inventory.

Not sure but I would think the rusty ball would be early because the flange is a little thicker than the black one.
You need to find some copies of the books “ All the Same”. It shows the difference in parts like this. Dan

that black one looks a bit odd. could it be some one made it from a later 1 piece drive shaft?

Spool is post 1910 because it is 191B not 191. It fits the 13/32 inch studs. The ball is later than 10 as well because the flanges for the bolt holes are thick. But not as late as 13 because the ball has the half moon cut outs for the ujoint pin retaining bolts.
