Tools and Spare Parts List for Touring? (Sizes of open-end wrenches?)

Hello Fellow Model T-ers,

I have been in the Model T "touring" hobby for almost 3 years now and have been discovering bit by bit what tools and spare parts I should carry when I am "out on the road" in order to avoid being a burden on fellow better equipped guys.

The following is my growing T LIST. Please add any part or tool that you think is practical and/or wise to carry while touring. Also, please disqualify anything on this growing T List that you feel is unnecessary.

Thank you for your ideas. I am editing/ refining this list as your comments add and/or remove items. Eventually it will be perfectly complete and logical.

Tools and Spare Parts that You Need to Carry When Touring

Bailing wire, duct tape, and zip-ties
Oil, oiling can, grease, gas can, radiator water

Open-end wrenches: 3/8", 5/16" 1/2", 9/16", 5/8", 3/4", 15/16" w/ breaker bar for axle nuts
Specialized wrench for adjusting transmission bands

A tarp to lie on under the car, and to catch small dropped parts that will otherwise disappear into the terrain.
A 2 x 8 block to go under the jack.
Wheel chocks.
3 irons are enough, but they should be long.
Spare bulbs (1915-1927).
A can and brush for washing parts. You have a solvent dispenser on the bottom of the carburetor.
At least one fresh tube of Ultra Black.
Gasket paper and scissors.
#1349 and #2335.
Tissues & paper towels.

What you carry depends on what you’re willing to do. Some will change bands and head gaskets alongside the road. Others won’t fix a flat.

re the cardboard, I try and do that too. I have seen cars in parking lots with huge globs of grease under them from the U-joint ball housing.
I would sub the 15/16 for a socket and breaker bar esp if the nuts have not been fully seated yet.
You are missing the hub cap wrench and spark plug/head nut wrench.

This is a very useful thread. Many of us are unsure what we should bring with us. There is limited room in a Model T and the things carried need to be well thought out.

So will the little #1917 Ford wrench, but the Ford 5-Z-829 is so much handier than either of them I keep one in my tool box./

You can charge it off the car battery.

We pack our wool fleeces in 2' x 4' 75um clear plastic bags. I carry one to use as a battle mat when/if I have to get down and dirty. It can double as a parka is the weather turns nasty, by cutting a neck hole and a couple of sleeve holes. It takes up next to no room.
On tours I pack an front inner wheel bearing and a pair of outers. I have never used them, but have helped others out on two occasions.

3/8" end wrench 5/16" end wrench. If you have non demountable tires, one spare of each size and also a spare innertube. If you have any non-T parts such as a distributor, bring points, condenser, rotor and cap. Also bring along a test lamp, to test for continuity of circuits from battery to whatever the circuit leads. If you have split rims, bring a split rim spreader along. You really don't need an oil can or spare grease if you lubricate before leaving home unless you are on a cross country tour which will last for weeks. But you should carry at least one quart of oil and some coolant, just in case. If you have a car which uses a lot of oil, you should bring a few quarts. Of course, if you use one, you can buy some more at any auto parts, or big box store. But always have at least one spare.

It is needed for those tiny screws in the headlight bulb sockets and at the internal end of the Klaxton horn plunger.

Lots of good ideas here, but so far, nobody mentions fire extinguishers or first aid kit. Also, I think "what to carry" with you on a tour depends upon what kind of tour you're talking about. There's every kind of "tour" from a week-long multi=state tour, down to just a fun little afternoon ice cream run around town, and everything in between. Common sense, right? Also, something that might make a slight difference in what you might want to carry along is,...on the bigger club chapter or national club type tours, it might matter if the touring consists of a "hub & spoke" series of daily tours with a hotel type "base", or, a several day run of several hundred miles. Anyway, just sort of thinking-out-loud here, FWIW,.....harold

Extra gas. Some kind of BIG squeezer to unseat the tire, if you are going to un-mount the tire. Split screw driver to start blade screws, (bendix cover). Throw in a coat and or a blanket, getting cold is always uncomfortable!

I always bring a small bottle of simple green, to clean my hands and if needed my spark plugs along with and old toothbrush.

That makes sense. It's not listed there under any other name, and we know it was part of the kit. I don't believe I've ever seen the No. 27 designation before. In all my parts books it goes by 1917.

If your car has a fuse, bring spares. I have a 10 amp at the battery that powers the car.

I do not know what you keep your tools in but in my modern car I keep them in a hard sided brief case. I keep sockets and wrenches that fit in an old metal first aid kit. For 3/8 drive sockets keep them together with a long 1/4 inch bolt with a washer under the head and nut. It is surprising how much will fit in a brief case and you have it all in one place and can lay it right close to where you are working.
Two other thigs to carry with you are a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.

The parts I carry are spares that I might need as well as ones that I might need to share with others. In addition to what others have mentioned I'll add a few. Pardon any duplicates.

If you have a original-type starter, a flat blade screwdriver with a long shaft that will let you remove the bendix cover screws more easily. Maybe a spare set of cover screws as they are an unusual size. I also carry a spare gasket for the cover "just in case." A spare bendix is a good idea as well.

For wrenches, I carry the ones with a ratchet on one end...they work great adjusting bands and in other uses. I also carry and Exhaust pack nut wrench, Hub wrench. Extended sockets, ratchet and breaker bar.

A magnetic pickup wand on a flexible shaft. Self-fusing silicone "rescue tape" to repair radiator hoses, fuel lines, etc. Hose clamps. A roll of dental floss.

I carry a spare New Day timer - cap, brush, parts needed to install it.

Tire pressure gauge -

Fine sandpaper - scotchbrite - toothbrush - small can of brake cleaner

In my trailer - A spare front wheel and additional spare tire on a rim. A floor jack with a bracket that allows me to lift the whole front or rear end at once. Grease gun. Extra oil and coolant. Digital Volt 0hm meter. Test leads.

It occurs to me that what you carry depends on what kind of travel you're doing. If you're driving your T to a tour or event, driving it while you're there, and driving it home, you need to limit what you take, especially if it's a runabout, speedster, torpedo, etc. without a lot of storage space. If you're trailering it you can take a lot more stuff.

There is a lot of room under the back seat if you have a touring. I keep a lot of stuff in there.

After reading all of the above, if I carry all the items everyone recommends I need to buy a TT to follow me everywhere I go.
