How do I remove this lockable steering wheel?

How do I remove this lockable steering wheel? There appears to be a button at the centre that likely should pop out and then something underneath must be loosened, BUT, how do you get that 3/4" button out? Anyone recognize the brand of it?

some where on the side of the lock there is an 1/8 pin that holds the lock in, they are tricky to find some times, drill it out and the lock will come out then you can take the steering wheel off, I a have had Deckers and another name after market wheel and that is how they where. By the way the quadrant are usually great looking and polish up real well after.

Ross, thank you for asking about locking steering wheels! I have one 9n my ‘24 Touring but haven’t gotten around to asking about it. BTW, the button on mine is the horn button. I inadvertently sound the horn about 9 out of 10 times I get in or out of the car…

Would help to know the manufacturer and what some of the items in the photo are. Couldn't find anything that looked like it on the Internet. The brand/model might be on the underside of the spokes (use a mirror). Since it is a locking steering wheel, one can assume that it must be unlocked to reach the component(s) holding the wheel in place. Hopefully it is not the pin that is holding the lock in place. What are the items noted in the photo for?

(1) The square piece above the lock appears to be a "port" to the lock, but, unfortunately it's painted in/on. (2) The lever at the outer end of the spider pulls out to lock the wheel. (Can have a nasty pinch when pulled.)

Given the purpose of the handle (#2), the position of the "port (#1) and lock... I'd focus on seeing if the port is removable and what you need to get at to remove the wheel. Back then many "anti-theft" devices didn't take much to defeat the first layer of security. Hot wiring was easy

I have a similar or same wheel. Dill Mfg. No tag, but lots of lettering around the center cover edge. Mine is all cast aluminum. Free wheeling handle is the same. If you put the lock @ 12 o'clock. @ 6 o'clock is a small slotted set screw that locks in the center cover. Loosen this screw & the center cover un screws. when off, there is access to the shaft nut. My setup doesnt have any other cover collar under the spider as I see under yours.

That wheel may also be a Fat Man type and pulling the handle might allow the wheel to tilt and provide more information on the removal.

If the key is lost, maybe a quick Youtube video on lock picking may be of help. Its quite scary how fast a lock can be picked.

Mine does have a set screw that allows the center of the wheel to be unscrewed revealing a large bolt that I assume secures the wheel. There is a plate riveted to the outside of the gearbox but it’s been painted over. There are no other markings anywhere on the wheel that I can find. I have no key, but the steering works normally so I have no immediate plans to open it up.

Hi The wheel I have looks just like yours. The tag looks different. There is a hole on the bottom of the wheel. There is a set screw that passes into the threaded section of the horn button (top picture) 3/32 is the size Allen on mine. Loosing that screw should allow you to unscrew the horn button gaining access to the shaft. Hope this helps out

I have one very similar to that lock mechanism that is all Rosewood and it was made by the Guardian Lock Wheel company in Cleavland, Ohio.

It has the three little spring loaded pegs on the bottom that are to connect the horn button to a missing ring on the steering column, but it does not have the 2nd handle.

Jerry, thanks for the photos and pointing out the set screw location. We had tried various drivers and other tools with no luck at all. Finally I got down and had a good look up the slot. NO SET SCREW!! It wasn't there, But, with all the poking, I guess in somehow loosened the center piece. Now, to the nut . .
I see the nut and what appears to be really a nut with a flange as one piece, and below that bearings. Is there a race under the nut/flange to hold the bearings?
