Replacement of the windshield on my 1915 touring

Post by bobt » Tue Apr 19, 2022 7:04 am

Hello. I would like to replace the original plate glass windshields with safety glass on my 1915 touring. I see where I can buy the set from Eklers (Mac's) for under $200 + shipping or should I just go to my local glass shop? I'm pretty handy and I have put curved windshields in before. I know the newer glass is thinner than the plate. Thoughts? Thank's, bobt

Don't waste your money. Pull the plate glass out of the frames and have a local glass shop cut safety glass to match.

I take the windshield frames to the glass shop and let them remove the old glass, make new glass, and install it. That way if there's a mishap, they're the ones responsible for fixing it.

You don't say if your windscreen glasses are still mounted in the brass bedding channel. If they are, and you want to keep them, you need to convey this to the glass shop. Otherwise, they may just set the glass in their usual material. In some way, this will be a better solution. It will stop rattles and it will seal the glass in the frame, preventing water getting in and rusting the frame channel.

My plate glass on my 1915 touring is NOT mounted in brass but rubber. The glass is in great shape but I would like to replace it for safety reasons and I drive a lot. I would prefer to do the work myself as the bottom w/s is stationary on the body. Question. What holds the glass channel retainers that are on the ends of the frames? I was advised to not waste my money on the Eckler's two piece w/s. Is this because it is substandard quality? Ok, One more question and its not about saving money or safety. I know they make clear window film that holds regular glass together in case of an explosion like in an office building. I used to work for a DuPont film plant that made polyester film. My local glass shop is kinda iffy. thanks, bobt

Bob, you can change your own glass yourself of course, but you need to get the glass from somewhere, and you will need to remove both windshield frames from the car to do it. I have installed some glass myself, and have had some installed by an automotive glass shop. If you can get your old glass out in one piece it is the best possible template for new glass. Glass is heavy and fragile, getting the new glass cut local has a lot of advantages. The local glass shop can make the new safety glass to the same size as what you took out of your frames, they can polish the exposed edge, then hand it to you for you to install at your convenience if that is what you want to do. Ford Service Bulletins has a good article on installing glass, its not difficult and once you do one frame you will be an expert.

Applying a film to your existing plate glass is not the solution, for safety you need safety glass. A plastic film to protect your home from high winds is not the same as your head smashing into a windshield in an accident. If you ever plan to drive in a MTFCA or MTFCI tour you must have automotive safety glass or go home.

Hello. Well, I got my new safety laminated glass windshield replaced in my 1915 touring. I removed the top frame and left the bottom frame on the car. I was amazed how easy the old plate glass came out. I was also amazed on how the old windshield was cut to fit. The corners and angled cut were kinda nibbled off. My local glass shop cut and polished the new panes for $133.00. They did an excellent job. (shout out to Virginia Auto Glass, Petersburg, Va) I did the installation by myself and was very happy with the results. Thanks to everyone who replied, bobt
