Looking for front axle repair service or access to a Stevens front axle repair tool in NJ/NY/PA/CT area

Post by ahovey » Tue Apr 26, 2022 12:46 pm

Hi, I am in the process of rebuilding my front axle and I wanted to see if anyone offered a repair service around NJ or had a Stevens front axle repair tool that I could potentially get access to.

Appreciate any help.

Austin.. are you interested in just replacing the bushings or is there a twist in the axle that needs straightening?.... If you have access to a Model T service manual that will help you. If there is a twist in the axle, large pipe wrench with an extension on the handle can be used to help straighten the axle outboard of the spring purch. If there's any damage to the center section of the axle I would just overlook and concentrate on the ends of the axle to true up measurements.

Steve - not brave enough with a T that isn’t in alignment anyway.

Robert - I primarily need to use the tool to replace the upper bushings and the threaded inserts. I would do it on a mill, but I don’t have the proper taper reamer and fear there is a risk of the two inserts not being concentric.
I have not received the axle yet, but was told it has a slight bend in the center. I have turned a few steel shafts that I will use to check the alignment from the spindle ends and the perches similar to the method in the service manual. I will use a strong hydraulic press to get that straightened out.

For what year model T will this axle be used?.. looking at the axle horizontally the top edge will appear to have a dip in the center, and this is normal.

It’s an early, no ford script, T-202 axle going on an ‘11. The bend in the axle I believe makes it bow outwards slightly per the seller.

Check for play in the kingpin and bushings. Replacing with new bushings and King pins may solve your problem

I have brand new .502” kingpins and new bushings in the spindles so I don’t expect play there. I was told the axle would need new threads on the bottom, so that’s what I need to use the tool for. The potential bend in the axle is another issue.
