That is one of Ford’s special racers, sent to France to compete in the light car, Grand Prize and Mt. Ventoux hill climb in 1911. The light body racer seen was entered in the light car competition, and at the last minute disqualified because it was required to add weight since it was non-stock.
As with the U.S. Ford “Special” racers, the engine had auxiliary exhaust ports, Bosch Dual Spark mag as well as many other special features. Training on the Grand Prix route, the racer was hopelessly wrecked, killing the mechanician.
A month later, rebuilt and in racing form, the Ford took 2nd overhaul in the prestigious Mont Ventoux hill climb. It also placed second in two qualifying competitions, a short hill climb and 1 km sprints. When the racer wrecked it was reportedly running over 75 mph.

Rob, thanks for the interesting article. I don’t fully understand how those extra exhaust ports work.
