gaskets for installing hogs head
Hi All,
I'm about to install my hogs head after replacing the bands with Kevlar. Should I apply RTV to one side or both sides of the gaskets? Which side would be better if only one side gets the RTV?

If the crankcase is straight, you should have no problem. I would recommend you put it in the bottom of the gasket as it will fill in any low spots on the crankcase. The most likely places for leaks are there the hogs head, the engine block and the crankcase come together, so put some on both sides in that location. Be very careful when you tighten down the bolts that you do not start in the corner near the engine because you need to pull up the bolts evenly starting in the middle of each side and working out to the edges. Do very similarly to torquing the head, but only about 20 ft lbs. I use an 8" handle and tighten to where it feels tight to my feel. Note if you find a small leak in the area, many times it can be sealed by wiping clean with naptha or lacquer thinner and letting it dry, then smear some black silicone sealer in the area.

Just a thought, feel of the bolt holes in the pan, if they are raised up, take a small ball-peen and tool them flat. Light strokes worked best for me.

I glue the gasket to the machined surface, block and hogsheads. I use river on the pan side. Not too much but not too little, you don’t want a ton of squeeze out. Agree with working down the raised metal around the holes in the pan.

I only put sealer on the pan side, both hogs head and block (No 2 Permatex). Should not need it on the machined surface, along with some in the corner were the felt meets the cork pan gaskets. I let the sealer setup overnight before putting everything together with bolts loosely in the holes so the gaskets are lined up.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Glueing to the block just keeps things from shifting. More of an issue when doing repairs but it is habit.

I made this to remove the dimples caused by tightening the bolts.
Also works good on the hole pan before putting it on the pan anvil.

It will pull the dimples in the pan back flat and can be used in the car with the hogshead off. Less chance of warping the pan & smashing the fingers.Also works good on the hole pan before putting it on the pan anvil.

Suggestion for the felt on the engine block. It likes to move around when you try to install the hogshead. Mix it with a little RV and put it in place. Let it set for a day and then install the hogshead. Save a lot of @#$%^&*
