I'd venture to state "early" as in the beginning of electric start car production 1919 - is there a manufacturers name on the back ?

Seen a few of those brass rims, likely a later part, in the mid twenties. Took one off a rather original '25. Think the brass was stamping from one of the makers, most are steel rims.
The early 1919 ammeter, on the far left, are rather unique, with exposed features.

Re: Brass cased amp meter
there is patent info on the front, and it is the same as a number of ammeters posted here in the past...all being black paint over "something".
the very early ones were Liberty Electric, and Hoyt, often with jeweled movements, often Nickle plated, and were real works of art compared to the ones that followed. I am far from an expert on this stuff, but am pretty certain that this post dates all of the early stuff.
as far as being brass, I'd be inclined to put a WEAK magnet on the case to see, as it appears to be steel peaking out from behind brass plating (but photos can be deceiving)

Re: Brass cased amp meter
Correct you are Dan - I should know that as I have a '19 and a spare "early" ammeter.
