Rear Hub Puller for Roadster

Post by VasaTrail » Mon Oct 31, 2022 12:51 pm

Anyone willing to rent me a rear hub puller? Will gladly pay the shipping to and from as well as a rental fee. I would buy one but no one has one in stock. Just need to get two wood wheels off and then putting on wire wheels.

Rear end is off the frame but I am going to try towing the rear end around with the lawn mower tonight to see if the wheels will break loose. Doubtful this will work as very little weight will be on the wheel to break it loose.

So....anyone willing to rent the tool?

You will probably need one again someday. I threaded a plate to use with a standard puller I use a lot. A machine shop should be able to make one fairly reasonably. Mine has worked very well for a long time.

Take Mark's advice. Buy one. Besides, rear wheels should be pulled at LEAST every other year to inspect everything anyway. I do mine annually. Glad I bought one.

Dale,

This is all I ever use. https://www.modeltford.com/item/2800KO.aspx

Screw it on, jack up the wheel on the opposite side while leaving the wheel you're removing on the ground, keep a wrench on it to keep it tight while you're hitting it, and after a few whacks, the wheel should be loose.

Yes, it is threaded to fit the hub threads. I forget the size. I cut the threads on my lathe and left it a bit tight but now is spins on and off very nicely. I have used it more than a dozen times and is the only way I do it now.
When did I do that?

There are pullers and there at good pullers. A good puller has good threads and a pinch bolt to lock the puller on the thread. Those fine threads will not take much load if you rely on the thread only. It is easy to strip out the thread under heavy load.
Rich's puller relies on just the thread, but it is formed in steel. Most pullers are castings, and these do not perform as well. Perhaps the best one I have found is a Mosberg aftermarket item made of steel, and having a pinch bolt.

That's a direct copy of the Ford puller - pretty tough to beat ! I have to agree with Allan regarding the pinch bolt - I've seen good pullers have their threads and/or the Ford hub threads ruined.

As pointed out, the Ford type pullers work well. Unfortunately, they can be cracked as shown in the picture if
the pinch bolt is overtightened. That's why I like Rich Eagle's use of a flat thick steel plate to make one.
And, with a slot and a pinch bolt added to it, that steel plate would pull even the toughest hub with no
damage. The ultimate wheel puller.

This is perhaps the best one I have had. It's a Mosberg tool no 660. It is all steel so the thread is robust. There is no chance of it cracking. The pinch bolt/ ring has built in measures against over tightening.
Best of all, the large square not captive in the housing, is actually free within, to move in and out with the driving bolt. This means that once the drive bolt is put under tension, a smart whack with a heavy hammer will allow it to shock the axle independently of the puller body. This is how the Ford pullers for wire wheel hubs workd.

Allan, that puller is one well designed tool!
Interesting to see it.
