Home made simple tool that works!

Post by vech » Tue Jan 24, 2023 9:09 am

If you are installing a hogshead, all by yourself, trying to hold onto it, and get the high gear brass "fork" into the slot, while maneuvering the hogshead while the gasket goo is drying before you can get it in position, can be a frustrating job. I was standing there, looking at the when I had an epiphany as to how to make a simple tool to keep the fork under control without any manipulation.

I cut this out of a piece of scrap neoprene rubber, using a gasket punch and a box cutter. It pops on the high gear shaft between the two arms, and keeps the fork more or less in the correct position. Since the rubber is flexible, it has give, and allows the fork to move into the slot with ease. After the hogshead is in place, you simply pull it out. Of the many times I have installed a hogshead, and struggled, using this simple tool, made the installation a LOT easier. I thought I would share this with everyone, it's easy to make and WORKS!

Good idea! And easy to remove when it's all together.

Well, like they say... " a better mousetrap"!
I used to just use zip ties, but by golly this looks simpler, think I would drill a small hole in the top edge of it and attach a string to it, just in case klutzy me would drop the dang thing into the "oil drink" pulling it out. If there's a way to do it, believe me, I'll find it!
