Removable Transmission Band Ears, What Years?
Cant find this on a search of the forum or in the Encyclopedia. When did Ford start using transmission bands with the removable ears?

I believe Ford started with the removable ear bands in late 24 going into 1925 production year.... Prior to that, they were offered by independent manufacturing companies.

Service Bulletin dates the change likely during the 1925 model year, and all the Improved Cars featured these.

Re: Removable Transmission Band Ears, What Years?
Thanks for the information Dan. I started looking for something about it in the MTFCA encyclopedia and didn’t find anything about the improved bands. I guess that kind of information is found in the Ford service bulletins?
They are mentioned in the Service manual though in the transmission section. But not in the improved car section. Maybe they weren’t because of the Service manual had already came out?

The detachable band ears first appear in the parts book of May, 1925, and are listed as used 1925-1927. This is in the CD/flash drive version of the encyclopedia. I don't believe it's in the abridged online version.

OK, that narrows it down. I was hoping my 1924 had removable ear bands and I would not need to remove the hogshead.

Re: Removable Transmission Band Ears, What Years?
I have a 24 Coupe I inherited from my Grandfather in 1958 and it had the removable ears type bands in it. But if it had been left as it was or after before he bought it in 1942 is unknown.
I have a feeling that new style bands were changed out in the older cars as time went on in the 30’s and up. And of course some were left as is.

Oh Happy Day! I removed the transmission cover and could see removable ears.
Removed a band to inspect and the lining fell apart. Glad I checked em out.

Glad your T has the later bands with the removable ears on it! Here’s Joe Snow showing how it’s done and being an example for you!!

Yep, cotton rots. That's why I went to Kevlar.

Where's Joe Snow when you need him. 12 minutes, bull! It is day 3 and I have 2 bands in and working on the last one. This is going to be more like 12 hours.
Does the 1925 hogs head have more room for changing bands? The 26-27 sure does.

Re: Removable Transmission Band Ears, What Years?
I don’t know if Joe really did the band job as advertised but I did it a few times in my 24 Coupe. I can’t remember at the moment but seems there is a certain order in how they go. Maybe the reverse is first?
It took me a good while the first time but the next time not too long but I had to stop for a little while and go back the next day. I’m sure you have the Ford service manual and it’s in chapter 13 for procedures to install new bands. It can be done but it’s a wrestling match for sure!

Re: Removable Transmission Band Ears, What Years?
I am a Scandinavia lining man, and have been using them for 50 years with complete satisfaction.
I just finished the last band, wow, much harder than changing bands on the improved Ford.
The Ford Service Manual has a confusing order of assembly that after a little trial and error, I came to understand to put the first band on over the forward most drum, then slide it back to the middle drum, next install the second band over the forward drum, then the third band over the rear drum. The names of the brake, reverse, and low speed drums and bands have been ommited for clarity.

Re: Removable Transmission Band Ears, What Years?
Be thankful you are not working on an aluminum HH motor.
The pedal bosses are thicker @ the ends compared to later iron covers.
It usually takes grinding the band to get demountables to fit, if then or turn the bands around.
I learned the hard way, to remove excess material under the pedal shaft bosses, to the later iron cover profile whall the cover is off.
