1925 Touring Car Project

Post by Gen3AntiqueAuto » Thu Nov 09, 2023 5:21 pm

Due to the project taking a weird turn - I'm starting a new thread. This was supposed to be a light and head upgrade and - well.... It's turned into "more". If you want to follow along I could use the subscribers and views. Here's today's video and it should give you a small ink-ling about the path we're on now. Tomorrow's video will be even more enlightening (already cued up). Enjoy the show!

I watched and left a "like". There's a lot going on in that engine compartment! Distributor, two horns, a top cylinder lubricator, what looks like a modern plastic master cylinder reservoir? Must have disk brakes on the rear. Quite the project!

He estimates he's put 40-50k miles on that car since I did the engine last. Yes - rear discs. "kids and ice cream" was the motivation. Had to be able to stop! I think I'll do a walk-around while it's apart.

Question for the old timers. Back when I built this engine the first two times I obviously put new rings in it. I can't remember if I got grant or hastings brand. I think I remember getting the one I didn't want due to a backorder. Pretty sure they both came from the same company and one of them was good and the other SUCKED (and I got them).

I'm trying to avoid the same mistake again, was it grant that was the crappy ones? If you're following the project videos you can see just how much oil went past these. It somehow pushed oil out between the gasket and head and gasket and block. You can see the smear path! Are they stamped (haven't gotten that far yet) with a name?

I have not had to replace rings on my 1924 yet, but the questions/answers on Lang's website regarding rings for aluminum pistons implies that the Hastings rings are believed to be superior, hence their higher price.

Happy Sunday - I've been putting out videos on this 1925 Model T touring car for a week or so now, it's still coming along. Currently still showing exactly how to tear one down for an engine rebuild and I GOT MY FIRST HATE MAIL (postings here)! This one is for "Steve King" - who had nothing good to say about what I do, ranted about me ranting! IF you have not seen the previous videos, please check them out, it's all coming out in order. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYWau9MXQNA

You state early in your video that the rings you're removing had "5 minutes total run time", then later state that they got progressively worse over 15 years. Which is it?

We've been talking about two seperate engines. I can clarify that in an upcoming video if I didn't explain it clearly. "we opted not to wait 11 months for the original block to be bored". I thought I said it, maybe that part got edited out.....?

Please throw your comments under the video on youtube so I know what you're referencing.

The bands in question were from the late Sheldon Lowenthal in Cleveland Ohio who was the custom friction company. He helped our hobby tremendously with his engineering skills. He was a pioneer in Kevlar cone clutches and later model t bands. You sent your bands to him and he riveted new linings on. They were quick to engage and chattered when stopping. His first generation compressed Kevlar was bonded to woven nylon backing material. It melted at about 400 degrees and caused catastrophic engine failures. Later he used cotton backing like a Scout belt that he bonded the Kevlar to. Later he obtained material from England that was woven Kevlar we use today. Now you know the story. One more comment, why would you keep the bands out of an individuals car and save for your stash.

Very interesting information!
Customer told me specifically to keep the parts we replace, those were too good to toss but worn in a couple spots amd he didn't like that. He wants "everything new" including the bands so I grabbed another set of steels from the pile. No funny business, he's "not mechanical" and doesn't want the leftovers. He doesn't even change his own oil, brings the car back here every spring for it. If he asks for them, they are still here to take.

Perhaps you should check to see how much your piston moves the head with the head studs loose.Measure that distance. Measure how thick your head gasket is.You have not established your pan rail to top of the block measurement. You will probably find the head clears just fine. Maybe youll find your Rod babbitter moved the centerline down several thousands to allow the pistons to pop up higher or possibly you have a bad set of pistons from your supplier. The piston heights vary between manufactures. You will learn this as you become more experienced.

First - It's Christmas day and I'm looking for someone on my naughty list (joke) - Next video: https://youtu.be/RNQ2nbOSmBM

Second - Hello Kevin. The Z head hit on all four with the OG setup. Your head hit on two. Loose bolts or tight. Can't explain it beyond "someone decked it many many times". IDK.
