It runs ... just poorly on magneto

Post by vping » Sun Feb 25, 2024 12:12 pm

Starter problems solved by cleaning and adding a ground strap.

Starts and runs great, and I can rev up rpms and sounds good.

When I switch to magneto it runs poorly and when I rev the rpms, it sputters.

I cleaned the mag pickup which did have fuzz on it and jiggled ignition key (no change) and it still runs poorly. Back to battery and it runs great.

What are my next steps to check?

Check magneto output voltage with an analog meter.
When confirmed too low, do an in car magnet recharge.

Yeah I read that somewhere. Exactly how do I check? 1 lead to pick up and 1 to ground?

Also what if I only have a digital meter?

1 lead to post, one to ground.
Digital meters will wack out from the coils operating. They are useless.

Magneto puts out AC power. Your dizzy uses DC.
Your magneto wont run dizzy. The only use would be to rectify the output to charge the battery.

Thanks for all the responses and patience John. Explain that last sentence please. Can I run on just battery?

If you have a generator motor(19-27), the generator keeps the battery charged & yes, you run on battery only with a dizzy.
If you had an earlier motor & needed to keep the battery charged, you could convert your magneto to DC voltage output to keep the battery charged.
