Down Draft Intake Manifold Info

Post by got10carz » Mon Feb 26, 2024 6:06 pm

Anyone have any idea what this manifold was intended for when new. I don't believe Model A due to the port shape. I know what the carb is from, and dont know if that's a clue or not. My only guess is Iron Duke Chevrolet.

The slotted mounting ears look just like a Model A, B or C, but unless the posts are round (they don't look round in pictures), it probably isn't Ford.

Looks like a special built for T with the ports enlarged. If it were a factory produced part for some other application there would likely be one or even several casting part numbers, patent dates, etc…

Used one, not the best flow, and can ice up something fierce. Ported block to match. Ran it with a 1 5/8 Master carb with the air screw removed, Giant head and a custom Crower ground A cam (later learned it is a stock grind from an MGA). Set up Fouled plugs like it was protesting CARB. That said, gave power well past 80 mph w/3.63's and a warford. The things we learn!

Steve, It's made to fit a Model T, I have one too, mine is pretty old. I believe it was originally intended as an updraft. Horizontal ports were used in T blocks back in the day. Photo of is the Ed Winfield engine, not mine !

I made variations of this over the last 40 years. My earliest version utilized a Corvair Turbo. Unfortunately I had installed a quite “radical” camshaft and the car had a terrible low speed performance! I have continued to make variations of this design but I now divide it for about 6” of the flow length and then I can use a quite radical camshaft.
Just my experience
