Installing Accy Spare Tire Carrier Advice
Unfortunately I can’t include a video. It seems the more I run the screw out without stabilizing the bottom right leg, the more I MIGHT be stretching the OEM tire carrier. See the bottom right leg position change from 1st to 2nd picture. Is there another curved piece that should go above the bottom of the additional rim ? The first picture has the 2nd spare tire taped to the 1st. The second is without the tape and the 2nd spare fairly wobbles incorrectly…… Ideas??

I'd first try flipping it. I'd also add, I used one of these on a long trip. I modified it to clamp on the outside, so not to scratch nice plated rims

Maybe this’ll help. I took a selfi from bottom up of the upper bracket. I thought the oval holes were for the 2 valve stems

Hi George,
From the information I have gleaned by studying period ads for Duplex tire carriers, the company offered a half dozen or so different style carriers to accommodate all of the different demountable rim profiles and tire widths.
The difference seems to be in the saddles, the three curved pieces which contact the rims. I have seen several of these nifty carriers for sale over the years and all of them have differed from one another in the shape of the saddles. As much as I would like to have one of these carriers, I won't buy one untill I find find a Duplex Company chart listing which part numbers fit which rim and tire combinations.

I am not sure that Duplex is intended for model T clincher rims, but it might actually be for a model T? The saddles look a little large for the model T clincher rims.
Regardless, I am not sure what the holes are for that your valve stems are poking through? But you do not want to do that. The holes do not line up with the rim's valve stem positioning. I suspect most of your trouble is because the valve stems are not allowing the rims to sit properly in the saddles.
When I used my Duplex carrier on my coupe, I had to let it lean sideways a little bit to clear all the valve stems and fixed lugs as well as the car's spare tire carrier's brackets.
Unfortunately I had to sell the coupe. But I still have the Duplex.
Also, one of your rims, with the notched out fixed lug looks like it might be a Chevrolet rim. It may or may not fit the model T's wheels.

Might that duplex tyre carrier be to carry two spare tyres, not two, spare, mounted clincher rim and tyre combinations?

I two tires and rims is a lot of weight on the Ford spare tire carrier, I would advise against it. Also, constraining the stems is looking for trouble.

Excellent advice from all ! Many thanks. I shall leave the 2nd spare in the trailer for this year’s Texas T Party. And list the Accy tire carrier on the Classifieds for a buyer there who doesn’t read this Forum
And Wayne; that rim is definitely Model T. I fitted the valve stem hole into a newly powdercoated Model T felloe and all 4 lug bolt holes lined up with the rim. On a previous thread one of the rim experts said one of the many rim suppliers offered rims with one lug notched out.

George, if the rim with the notched lug measures the same width as a T rim, you may be correct. If you feel like measuring it, and it is 3/16"-1/4" wider, it is most likely a Chev rim with a shifted valve stem hole. If the lugs are branded Hayes on the outer surface, and the rim is wider, I would say it was a modified Chev rim. We use them on my son's 10 cwt lorry which is fitted with 4.40 x 23" clincher tyres.

I have mounted 3 spare tires on the side wall of my enclosed trailer.
With the use of a piece of Velcro 2” wide X 18” long and a ¼” X1 ¼ fender washer, a 30 X 3 ½ Model T spare tire can be mounted inside a trailer wall. The advantage to this system is the ease of mounting and dismounting the tire repeatedly. When the spare tire is mounted resting on the trailer floor, it is secure, and an inexpensive way to store/or and transport it. A package of 2” X 5’ Velcro can be found at Walmart stores for $8.47. This is not a product endorsement. Photos available upon request.

George, I certainly would not argue about that rim being for a Ford. I have seen a few over the years like that. I am not sure why Chevrolet offset the valve stem such that the one lug had to be notched out. Might have been a patent royalties thing? The Ford offset still can hang up on the lug bolt and be a pain in the wazoo. So, of course, wheel and rim manufacturers had to offer notched rims in order to avoid that hassle (minor though it may be?).
The outside wheel and rim manufacturers all made wheels and rims for other automakers as well as for Ford. And they all made after-market replacement or upgrade wheels as well.
I have never seen any evidence to support the notion? But it would not surprise me if it turned out some few model Ts could have left the factory with notched lug rims. Demand from Ford was very high, and if the manufacturer was a bit short for an order, they could have maybe substituted some notched rims to fill out an order?

Good morning Allan - or good evening in Oz. Yes, I felt like measuring it and the 3” width of the rim in question is consistent with all other T rims. Has only 1 valve stem hole and all 4 fixed lugs line up with 4 felloe holes. Please don’t accuse me of possibly owning C***y parts. I have a reputation to uphold

I completely agree with your C---Y sentiments. When I restored my set of Hayes wire wheel for my 1915 tourer two of them sandblasted and completely rebuilt the two rears. It wasn't until I was fitting them to the car that I discovered that some Philistine had drilled a front wheel with an extra valve stem hole in the felloe to take a C---Y rim.
I was not about to weld it shut and mess up my paint job, so it scored a hand painted plastic plug.

You guys may all be missing the boat. We are no longer using "standard" size 30 X 3 1/2 tires. They're all oversize which means fatter, and they won't fit some original spare tire carriers.
