Looking for info on Bauer fatman wheel

Post by DHort » Sun Jul 14, 2024 1:25 am

I would add a picture, but apparently I am not allowed to do so.

A friend just gave me this wheel. It states Bauer Tilt Wheel. It appears
to be locked up. Any suggestions on how to open it up, or maybe does it
need the leverage you get from installing it?

Thank you.

ps I can send the pics to someone else if they want to post them here.

Unless it has a freewheel locking mechanism, all it needs it lift it up is to the lift the brass knob connected to the plunger that clicks into place. Mine is that simple. However, the spider is aluminium and the shaft steel. You will have to work busting some corrosion perhaps.

This one is pretty simple, the is a bolt that holds the steel piece that is bolted to the steering shaft. It is threaded. There is a brass nut that needs to be removed then take the bolt out by unscrewing it. Use the correct blade for the slot. Dont muscle it you’ll break it off, don’t ask how I know.
If you have been unsuccessful in unscrewing it don’t try to tap it out remember it’s threaded. Put some penetrating stuff on it and let it work. The tolerance on the steel piece and the aluminum spider is super tight. If you are successful you’ll want to put a socket extension through the shaft hole so you can tap it out in the direction pictured. I went straight to that method because the release mechanism on mine had corrosion and after trying to pull the release it seem like my only choice. The release pull knob is thread also. Spray penetrating stuff on it too. If you get the knob off then yo can gently tap it out. I put two nuts on it to help keep me from messing the threads for the the knob up.

I did the same as John T, above, but my release mechanism released first after copious amounts of penetrating oil. Then, I was able to free the hinge part, and finally get the bolt out. Use plenty of penetrating oil and work both ways: loosen/tighten a bit at a time. Once the item starts moving the battle is more than half won.

Good Luck

P.S. When you start wondering about the extra hole in the "hinge" part; it's for HORN wires. There is a horn button nut to hold the hinge part on the steering column. The wires go through the hole and down the column.

Yes Terry

I was wondering what that hole was for. I knew it wasn't to hold the rose my sweetie gave me.

So if the plate has 3 holes in a triangle around the shaft hole then the steering wheel came with the Bauer Bakelite horn button if it does not have those 3 holes you could use an accessory nut horn button.
