Brass carb float sealer???
I have soldered a couple questionable spots on the Kingston L-4 carb's float that I have been trying to save. I would like to seal the entire float, encase it, as it were. Is there a gas-resistant sealer that will do this, such as a marine spar varnish?
If I cannot save this float - which sinks like a rock - why wouldn't a float from an L-2 Kingston work? The L-4 float is not being made, but the L-2 float is. The bodies and bowls appear to be the same. Is the hinged area different between these floats that makes using the L-2 float in this L-4 carb not possible?

Line-a-tank. Gas tank sealer would work. I have used it on cork floats.
Should work fine on a brass float also.

Re: Brass carb float sealer???
On old cork or or brass floats that were leaking I mix a 50/50 solution of acetone & Red Kote (found at most part stores) which I also use on gas tanks. The key is to let it dry until there is very little smell. Another tip is with that same mix I’ll coat the inside of the carburetor fuel bowl & at times the part of the carb body that sits in the fuel bowl. I’m cheap so I run 80/15 corn gas when I know I’ll be driving a lot. Rational for coating those parts is that it seals the metal from rusting. Your mileage may vary.

Re: Brass carb float sealer???
Why not just get another L4 float? Buy a core carb. Dan

Re: Brass carb float sealer???
The float in this carb was and still is a mess, despite best efforts to resuscitate the cadaver : it still leaks and the adjusting tang broke in two and fell off. The rest of the carb is pretty good, however. Because of the broken tang, buying a repo modern material float won't help. I would gladly buy a good used L-4 float or even a complete L-4 carb with a good float to use as spare parts. I know it's not the best Model T carb available, but it is correct for this 1919 Centerdoor.

Something to remember and think about, every bit of solder or coating put on that brass float changes it buoyancy, making it heaver.

I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Here’s what an L2 float would look like in an L4. A little too big. If you’re good at soldering you can put an L4 hinge on an NH float. Just remove the NH hinge and solder it to the side without the recess where the NH hinge goes.
